Anger Journal Template: Read the Anger Before You Act on It

A free anger journal template: what triggered you, how your body felt, what need wasn't met, and how you want to respond instead of react.

Anger usually means something mattered. This template slows it down just enough to see what, before you send the text or say the thing.

The template's own note: Anger is information. This is a place to read it before you act on it.

The questions

  1. What triggered me?
  2. How did my body feel?
  3. What need wasn't met?
  4. How do I want to respond (not react)?

How to answer them

  • Write the trigger as facts first, then your interpretation in a separate sentence.
  • The body question buys you time. Jaw, chest, hands, heat. Noticing it is already calming.
  • Needs are the real answer: respect, fairness, rest, being heard, being included.
  • Respond can mean "not now". Sometimes the best response is to sleep on it.

Example

An example of a filled-in entry:

What triggered me?
My roommate left the dishes again after we agreed on a schedule.

How did my body feel?
Hot face, tight shoulders. I was typing a long message.

What need wasn't met?
Fairness. Feeling like agreements count.

How do I want to respond (not react)?
Talk tomorrow morning, not by text. Ask what's getting in the way.

Anger Journal is one of the Emotions templates, and those are always free. If this is more than a bad day, and it's getting in the way of sleep, work or the people around you, talk to a doctor or a therapist. In the US you can call or text 988 any time; elsewhere, your local emergency number or a crisis line can help.

Use it in Daykept

  1. Open Daykept and tap Settings in the bottom bar, then Templates.
  2. On the Gallery tab, find Anger Journal (it's in Emotions) and tap Use now. A new entry opens with the questions in place.
  3. Want it one tap away? Tap Save to keep it in My Templates. Daykept also suggests the templates you used most recently at the top of a blank new entry.

It's one of the 14 free templates in the Gallery. You can also edit your own copy (reword a question, drop one, add one) and save it as your own template.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to write angry?

No. Writing is a safe place for it. Just don't send anything you wrote in the moment until you've slept on it.

What if I'm angry at myself?

Use the same questions. The unmet need is often rest, or a standard you set too high.
