Daily Gratitude Journal Template: One Question That's Enough

A free one-question gratitude journal template, with examples of specific (not generic) answers and how to keep the habit going in Daykept.

Gratitude journaling gets stale fast when every entry says "family, health, coffee." This template asks one question and leaves room for the part that matters: being specific.

The template's own note: Small and specific beats big and vague.

The questions

  1. What are you grateful for today?

How to answer them

  • Name one thing, then say why. "My sister" is a list. "My sister texting to check how the interview went" is a moment.
  • Look for the small, recent thing. The warm bus, the email that fixed itself, the stranger who held the door.
  • Don't repeat yesterday's answer. If you're stuck, pick a sense: something you heard, tasted, saw today.

Example

An example of a filled-in entry:

What are you grateful for today?
The 20 minutes of sun at lunch. I ate outside for the first time this month and came back to my desk actually calm.

Read back a week of entries on a Sunday. Specific answers bring the day back in a way a list never does.

Use it in Daykept

  1. Open Daykept and tap Settings in the bottom bar, then Templates.
  2. On the Gallery tab, find Daily Gratitude (it's in Gratitude) and tap Use now. A new entry opens with the questions in place.
  3. Want it one tap away? Tap Save to keep it in My Templates. Daykept also suggests the templates you used most recently at the top of a blank new entry.

It's one of the 14 free templates in the Gallery. You can also edit your own copy (reword a question, drop one, add one) and save it as your own template.

Frequently asked questions

How many things should I write?

One is enough if it's specific. Three is fine on good days. Quality matters more than count.

What if I don't feel grateful today?

Write that, and one small thing that was okay anyway. Honest entries are more useful later than forced ones.
