Mood Journal Template: Name It, Trace It, Help It

A free mood journal template: how you feel, what set it off, what helps. How to fill it in, an example, and how patterns show up on the mood calendar.

Every Daykept entry already starts with picking a mood. This template goes one step further: what might have set the feeling off, and what tends to help. Those two things turn a log into self-knowledge.

The template's own note: There's no wrong feeling here. Naming it is the work.

The questions

  1. How am I feeling right now?
  2. What might have set this off?
  3. What helps when I feel this way?

How to answer them

  • Be more precise than "bad". Drained, lonely, irritable, flat: the closer the word, the more useful the entry.
  • "Set this off" is a guess, not a verdict. Sleep, food, a message, the weather, nothing obvious. All fair answers.
  • "What helps" builds your own playbook. After a month you'll have a list written by the person who knows you best.

Example

An example of a filled-in entry:

How am I feeling right now?
Irritable. Short with everyone since lunch.

What might have set this off?
Five hours of sleep and skipped breakfast. Also the group chat.

What helps when I feel this way?
Food, a walk without my phone, going to bed early. Muting the chat for a day.

Your mood calendar and Report show the pattern over weeks: which days lean heavy, what the good weeks had in common.

Use it in Daykept

  2. On the Gallery tab, find Mood Journal (it's in Health) and tap Use now. A new entry opens with the questions in place.
  3. Want it one tap away? Tap Save to keep it in My Templates. Daykept also suggests the templates you used most recently at the top of a blank new entry.

It's one of the 14 free templates in the Gallery. You can also edit your own copy (reword a question, drop one, add one) and save it as your own template.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I use a mood journal?

Daily is ideal, but a few entries a week spread across the month is enough for patterns to show.

Mood tracker or mood journal?

A tracker records the feeling; a journal adds the why. Daykept does both: the mood is one tap, the rest is optional.
