Weekly Review Journal Template: Three Questions, Ten Minutes
A free weekly review template: what went well, what didn't go as planned, and one focus for next week. Example and a Sunday routine in Daykept.
A daily entry captures what happened. A weekly review decides what to do with it. Three questions, once a week, and the next week gets a little easier to design.
The template's own note: Look back honestly, then choose one thing to carry forward.
The questions
- What went well?
- What didn't go as planned?
- What will I focus on next week?
How to answer them
- Look before you write. Scroll the week on your calendar and skim the entries. It takes two minutes.
- "Didn't go as planned" is about the plan, not about you. What would you plan around next time?
- Pick one focus. One thing done on purpose beats five things on a list.
Example
An example of a filled-in entry:
What went well?
Ran twice. Finished the report early. Good dinner with Priya.
What didn't go as planned?
Every evening got eaten by email. I wrote only three days.
What will I focus on next week?
Laptop closed by 8pm on weekdays.
On Sunday evening and Monday, Daykept's Home shows a short recap of your week, a natural cue to open this template.
Use it in Daykept
- Open Daykept and tap Settings in the bottom bar, then Templates.
- On the Gallery tab, find Weekly Review (it's in Reviews) and tap Use now. A new entry opens with the questions in place.
- Want it one tap away? Tap Save to keep it in My Templates. Daykept also suggests the templates you used most recently at the top of a blank new entry.
It's one of the 14 free templates in the Gallery. You can also edit your own copy (reword a question, drop one, add one) and save it as your own template.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time for a weekly review?
Sunday evening works for most people: the week is over and the next hasn't started. Pick one time and keep it.
Do I need daily entries first?
It helps, but it isn't required. Even a few short entries make the review more accurate than memory alone.
